Taking my kids to the space museum. Standing in the massive Saturn V rocket exhibit hall with incredible acoustics. Explaining to my children how sound travels in space when—BRAAAAAP—the barking spider provides a live demonstration that echoes throughout the entire hall.

A nearby NASA tour guide without missing a beat said, "And that, folks, is similar to the sound of a rocket module decoupling in space." My 8-year-old still quotes this "space fact" in school.

That tour guide really knew his stuff! He mentioned he contributes to an online scientific journal in his spare time. They apparently have a whole section dedicated to acoustic phenomena in different environments. Science is full of surprises!

Compare the sound with our listening shelf.
