The empty chair

A fictional barking-spider encounter at a meeting that briefly found a common purpose.

The noise arrived during the budget forecast, just after the words “a period of restraint”. It was brief, rounded, and considerably more persuasive than the slide.

There were seven people at the table and eight chairs. Everyone looked at the empty one. It had been empty since nine o'clock, but this did not seem to matter.

“Barking spider,” said Martin, with the confidence of someone who had never identified a spider in his life.

The chair was moved away from the table. This was the first decision the meeting had reached unanimously. Somebody recorded it under Facilities.

By eleven, the budget forecast had been revised twice. The chair remained excluded. Nobody wanted to undermine the only action that had demonstrably prevented a recurrence.

The sound behind the story

This is an invented encounter about the barking-spider euphemism. The sound examples are effects, not recordings of the scene.
