The silent lift

A fictional barking-spider encounter in a lift with excellent acoustics and limited suspects.

The lift stopped between floors long enough for everyone to notice how quiet it was. Then it was not quiet.

A woman with a parcel inspected the floor indicator. A man in running shoes inspected his watch. The third passenger had been looking at the ceiling before the noise and saw no reason to change his position.

“These old buildings,” said the man.

The building was six months old. The woman had attended its opening. She considered mentioning this, but the explanation had already become a useful public service.

When the doors opened, all three stepped out on the same floor. Two immediately took the stairs. The woman waited until they had gone, then pressed the button again.

Later she described it as a barking spider. The parcel, which had occupied both her hands throughout, was mentioned early in the account.

The sound behind the story

This is an invented encounter about the barking-spider euphemism. The sound examples are effects, not recordings of the scene.
